Relatives & Road Trips

Chapter Four - Radium to New Denver

The trip from Radium to New Denver wasn't that long so Day Three was a pretty relaxed affair. We stopped off in Creston for some tea, at this weird little cafe that I suspect was run by Mormons, or one of the other minor religons. I wasn't very impressed with Creston as a place and it was nice to get to Nelson, where we stopped for lunch. We chose a restaurant called The Outer Clove, which is garlic-themed and an awesome place. I had a seed and nut burger which was incredible and I think maybe even better than the food I ate in Naam in Vancouver. Ritchie got a garlic and white chocolate cheesecake for dessert which was odd and not that nice from the tiny piece I sampled. After lunch we had a stroll about Nelson which is a lovely place and I'd like to go back there one day.
We made it to New Denver around dinner time and found our accommodation easily, as there aren't that many streets in New Denver. We didn't really intend to stay in New Denver originally, but needed a place to break up our journey, and Ritchie discovered the Villa in a tourist brochure and we decided New Denver was as good a place as any. Villa Dome Quixote is fantastic- a little collection of hobbit-style domed cottages guarded by a bigger dome complex.
Since New Denver is so tiny, we decided to locate a shop to buy some dinner in and make it back at the Dome rather than try and find a restaurant, so we went for a wander around. At the bottom of what I'm assuming was the main street is Lake Slocan, which is beautiful, especially at that time of a sunny day. On our way back from the lake a local man, named Robin, started chatting to us and it was really nice to experience such a friendly act. I think that's something I'm going to miss about Canada, back when I'm in unfriendly Scotland.
Throughout the whole trip we were very lucky with accommodation and again, we had the place to ourselves, so we took advantage of the outdoor hot tub and the sauna after a nice, simple dinner of fruit and bread. Once all spa-ed out we had a game of Scrabble in the living room at the top of the Main Dome.
I think New Denver was the highlight of the trip for me since I wasn't expecting anything much from it and it was just such a beautiful place. The fact that we slept in a dome and there was a good selection of complimentary tea made it pretty special too.
Villa Dome Quixote -go and stay there!
